Jobs Board at the £5 App Meet

At the first £5 App meet we had a lot of people who either run their own company or are part of a start-up. I spoke to a bunch of people about how they go about finding contractors and permie staff and everyone agrees that it is a right pain. Personal networking seems to be the main approach and that’s just rather time-consuming.

We do have the Wired Sussex Jobs Page but that only really serves small-to-mid-sized companies looking for permie staff. As an experiment we’ll have a physical jobs-board at the next £5 App meet. If the idea proves useful then we’ll grow it (somehow).

The idea is that you can post on the board for:

  • Jobs available (part/full/whatever-time)
  • Skills available (from part-time evening work upwards)
  • £5 App collaborations (if you have an idea but lack the skill or vice versa)

John and I will provide the board & pins, pens and paper (or bring along a pre-prepared ad) and the day after I’ll transcribe the ads to the blog. If people find this useful and introductions get made then we’ll figure out how to grow the idea for a future event. The board is free, you just have to attend (or know someone who is) to post to it.

Raj (kwiqq) on Brighton’s Geek Scene

Raj (kwiqq.com) blogs about the local Brighton start-up scene and our ShowMeDo.com gets a mention.
Raj and Alan will be presenting at the next £5 App meet (upcoming.org 8th May). Raj also covers the Brighton Girl Geek Dinners, I was at the 3rd event last night – another strong turn-out and a great talk on the social side of Virtual Worlds by Aleks Krotoski.
It is rather nice to see that the local geek scene just keeps on growing!

£5 App on Social Start-ups – 2nd event Tuesday May 8th

[Edit – see ‘Second £5 App Write-up – Social Start-ups‘ for the write-up of this second event]

John and I have organised our second £5 App, this one takes place on Tuesday May 8th (details: Upcoming). Please mark your attendance over at Upcoming and un-attend if you can’t make it as we’ll be guessing how much beer to buy from the Attending list.

Our next pair of speakers have a great set of tales for us:

Alan Newman, founder of Sensible Development:

“The evolutionary tale of Sensible Development: From the spare room to the enterprise – 7 years of growth from learning Java in spare time, consulting, running off with The Guardian’s fanbase, developing an online product, selling it, licensing it back, watching it fly (and then crash), then the re-birth, whilst bringing up a family”

Raj Anand, co-founder of Kwiqq.com:

“The story of Brighton based kwiqq.com. How an inexperienced university graduate went from an idea to investment and clients in a few months. Raj explains what it took him to setup the business, how he raised investment and marketed his product.”

John and I will provide beer, John is hoping to bake a cake, the talks will take 45 minutes each (including time for lots of interaction) then after a bit we’ll head off to a local pub.

At the same venue:
The week before – Matt and Charlie’s Think What You Could Do If You Had The Money And Then Figure Out How To Do It Anyway (the last event was very practical, I’m looking forward to the next one).
The week after – Danny’s first Geek Wing Thing – wine tasting+expertise==fun!

Details of our first £5 App event here and here covering my ShowMeDo.com and John’s chess-by-RSS Chrss.

Geek Wine Tasting

Danny’s fabulous Geek Wine Tasting idea is going ahead, first tested at the last TWYCDIYHTM (btw thanks Matt and Charlie for organising TWY…I’m looking forward to the next one). Likely date: Tues 22nd May.

He’s looking for a better name than ‘Geek Wine Thing’ – I’m suggesting Geek Tasting…please help Danny out with some suggestions.

There will be a wine-expert leading the night, several wines to try, geek-background on the wines, followed (I guess) by a saunter to a local pub. Alcohol+education == great combo 🙂

The next £5 App evening is almost planned and the Upcoming announce (for Tues May 8th) will follow soon.
